Government will make payments under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana through post offices in future.
Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu made the announcement in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh today. Postal payments banks will soon be opened to make these payments as there are not many commercial bank branches.
Mr Naidu said the Centre's objective is to ensure welfare funds reach the beneficiaries directly without any pilferage.
Earlier, Andhra Pradesh Postal and Telecom circles were opened in the presence of Communications
Minister Manoj Sinha, M Venkaiah Naidu and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Speaking on the occasion, Venkaiah Naidu said, the communications department has an onerous task of playing a vital role in the making of a Digital India that will change the face of the country.
