India and Egypt have signed an agreement in the area of Maritime Transport to step up co-operation on the seas. The agreement was signed after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in New Delhi.
In his press statement, Mr Modi said, trade and investment linkages are essential for eco prosperity of the societies. He said, increased flow of goods, services and capital has to be the key priorities of both sides.
Mr Modi appreciated Egypt's good work during its current term on UNSC. He said, the two countries agreed that UNSC needs to be reformed to reflect today's realities. He said, India and Egypt decided to facilitate greater people-to-people contacts and cultural exchanges.
Earlier, President Sisi was accorded ceremonial welcome at the forecourts of the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Yesterday, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
According to sources, Mrs Swaraj highlighted India-Egypt trade in the meeting which she said is still below the potential.
Mrs. Swaraj outlined some economic reforms and flagship initiatives launched by India which offer enormous potential for further diversification of trade and investment ties with Egypt. She said apart from rice, Egypt could also import Indian wheat and milk, in which India is a world leader.
She said that the visit of President Sisi also provided an opportunity to upgrade security ties and anti-terror cooperation with the highly strategic African nation.
Showing gratitude, Mr Sisi said, both the countries share centuries old ties which has remained resilient. He recalled his previous meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed his desire to take the bilateral relationship to a new level.
President Pranab Mukherjee will host a Banquet in this evening in the honour of Mr Sisi.
